Off-Beat Teams to Join in & around Cleveland

By Melissa Pocek

The onset of the summer season triggers the start of some incredible off beat teams around the Cleveland area, and they’re searching for fresh new team members.  My own ability as a sports team player ranges from mediocre to extreme averageness.   These are teams that almost anyone (including me) could join and excell at with a little drive and determination, even if you did not spend your life playing organized sports.   You will not see teams like football, basketball, or any other American “institutional sports” on my list. None of these sports will have television commercials to sell themselves. Nor will they have Nike or Reebok endorsements either. And, no, colleges will not give you a free ride for being a pro at these sports. The ones I choose to include in the list range from quirky to extremely quirky, but all are guaranteed to be absolutely fun.

Roller Derby
The first all-female roller derby team to hit Cleveland was Burning River Roller Girls in 2004 (TK). And quickly afterwards three more teams arose in the Cleveland area including The Cleveland Steamers, The Hellbombers, and The Hard Knockers. The teams compete once a month and play from April until August. Try-outs are held in late August. For more information about roller derby and how to join check out: www.ohiorollergirls.com or

Kickball
The laid-back kickball team is one of the cheapest leagues to join in Cleveland as well as one of the most popular leagues. Players range in age from 21 to 65 and have a wide range of athletic ability. Teams have 6 men/4 women in a 9-week league. There are 2-week playoffs and prizes for the league champions.  For more information check out: www.sportsmonster.com

Disc Golf
Disc golf is not that different from its conventional namesake; but instead of using clubs and balls, golfers toss discs, like Frisbees, toward a basket. Each "hole" has its par, and the low score still wins.  Sims Park in Euclid has become a popular spot for disc golfers.  On Monday nights, there are tournaments.  Courses also have been added to Cuyahoga County Airport in Richmond Heights and Osborne Park in Willoughby. For more information, check out:  http://www.ohiodiscgolf.com.  Since 2000, Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula has been home to an impressive DGC (Disc Golf Course). Not only does this bulky and beautiful course have plenty of room, but they also have a funky down to earth team that’s always looking for newcomers. The leagues start playing during the Spring and Fall seasons.  And since the course is open year round the DG crew even has an annual Ice Bowl event during the winter.  For more information of how to join check out: http://www.shootthebreezediscgolf.org

Corn Hole
Corn hole is a fun game in which you literally toss bags filled with corn or sand or beans into a raised platform with a hole in it. That being said if you’re looking for a low physical activity game, corn hole is for you. You play in teams of either singles or doubles.  You probably won't have to look far to find a league at a local watering hole near you.  Check out this website for more details of events:  http://www.playcornhole.org.

Dodgeball
Want to hone your skills of dodging balls? Then joining one of Cleveland’s many dodgeball teams may help you. With nine weeks of action, dodgeball will help you get into fabulous shape while hanging out with some of the coolest young athletes in the area. Cleveland’s dodgeball league begins in the summer, so if your interested in joining check out this website and sign up soon:  http://www.sportsmonster.net/cleveland/dodgeball

Ultimate Frisbee
This counter culture non-contact team sport originated on a college campus in Massachusetts in the 60’s. Though, the game’s rules have stayed the same, the ages of those who play the game widely ranges. Thus showing that anyone can have fun throwing around a plastic disc. The Cleveland Ultimate Frisbee team has a hefty tailgate atmosphere and is a fun way to meet other energetic Clevelanders. League starts in June.
